Helix Youth Ministry Coffee & Pastry Fundraiser

So I’m in the process of bringing back two of our most popular fundraisers. Butter Braid Pastries and Ugly Mug Coffee. Please consider supporting our youth ministry by place your order between May 5-19th. We will be taking orders in the church office as well as directly through our current youth ministry participants. These pastries are very good and they go awesome with a fresh brewed cup of Saving Grace coffee (fair trade, and organic). More info is coming so mark your calendars and be on the look out. You never know when we will bring out the free samples.

VBS Meeting

It's that time of year again. We will have our first planning meeting for VBS on Friday February 25th from 6-7pm at St. John UCC in the church library. Anyone who is interested in helping with this year VBS please join us. We will be choosing a curriculum and setting the dates for VBS. This year St. John UCC will be hosting VBS and we could sure use all the help we can get.

This is Not a Vacation

We have heard so many comments about our mission trip to New Orleans and most of them have been supportive and positive. Some have been “I’m not paying for there vacation”. I must tell you. Sleeping on a deflated air mattress and using

dormitory showers after a long day of profusely sweating and working construction all day, is no vacation. Many of our pictures share the story of New Orleans and the surrounding communities. We have experienced the high lights of the area as well as the many devestated areas on the first day in town . We have spent full work days building and teaching. It’s been a wonderful Mission trip and I personally look forward to returning with the youth next year.

We need to take a long hard look at the devastation that still exists in this area and continues today (Oil Spill) and ask ourselves how we are helping this struggling community.

2010 Mission Trip to New Orleans

It’s been very rewarding to be able to help in the recovery process. We have been working with several area ministries and recovery projects.

One of the families we have been helping is The Burrell Family .

On Wednesday several of our group had an opportunity to visit the Community Center of St. Bernard. They saw the facility and were able to see what a difference this center is making. It was quite a moving experience for those who were visited to facility. It’s a small operation making a big difference in the lives of those affected by “The Storm” and the recent Oil Spill. Missions Trip 2010 to New Orleans

We will be leaving on Saturday June 19th. We will take a few days to travel down south. We plan to go on a tour with Good Shepard UCC on Monday the 21st and start our work assignments on Tuesday. Click image to see their website. We will be staying at their church facilities while we are their for this missions trip. We will be doing our work through St. Bernard Project. Check it out !

I just wanted to let everyone know that our next twelve week session begins on April 19th. In the first 4 weeks our groups combines weight loss was 114 lbs. How amazing is that. That’s just the kind of stuff that happens when you put Christ First.

Church Spring Auction

A church auction is being planned to raise money to pay for the boilers and to replenish the church treasury. We will accept items as a 100% donation to the church or as a consignment.

As our auction date draws near, we must have a list of items donated to advertise. Therefore, we’re asking that you sign up on the bulletin board in the narthex as soon as possible. Items that we’re accepting may be large or small, old or new, homemade or baked. You be creative and let us know what you want to donate, for example: gift baskets, tickets to a show, quilts, pie, furniture, boats, cars, jewelry, gift certificates, household items, etc. We will accept donations from people who are not St. John members, so encourage your friends and neighbors to donate all those household items they no longer want or use. Items can be brought to the Fellowship Hall between Monday, April 20th and Friday, April 24th. Call if you need help bringing in large items. If you want to consign an item, you will receive 70% of the sale price and the church will receive 30% of the sale price. You will receive a receipt for tax purposes.

Jim Calhoun, auctioneer, and staff have been hired to do this auction. It is important to note that after all expenses of the auction are paid, 5% of the remaining proceeds will go to FACC and the balance will be used for our church treasury.
